Abstract
The goal of this project is to synthesize porphyrin derivatives appended with chiral nitrogen based heterocyclic compound to create receptors for chiral guests including common amino acid derivatives and some major components of popular medicine such as S-Ibuprofen and Naproxen. The method we to synthesize the chiral hosts is to substitute the hydrogen in an ortho-meso-phenyl position for an amino group at one or more phenyl groups in 5, 10, 15, 20-tetraphenylporphyrin; we then condense the amino porphyrin with the chiral nitrogen heterocyclic compound to make urea functionalized chiral porphyrins. This thesis will report on the synthesis of these compounds and their preliminary chiral recognition properties.
