This is a video recording of an oral history interview with Shirley Nabors Smith. It was conducted September 19, 2019. The interviewer is Gwendolyn Savage. The videographer is Sandy Bond.
In this interview, Shirley Nabors Smith shares her memories of growing up in Charleston, Texas and her life working as an educator.
Shirley Nabors Smith was born in 1938 to Golden Ann George and Herbert Lee Nabors. She grew up in Charleston, Texas and often spent time in Vasco and Lake Creek, Texas. She worked on the family farm, as well as the family owned grocery store and gas station. Smith also shared memories of watching performances by the Light Crust Doughboys.
Smith received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from East Texas State College, and became an educator. Following her retirement, she began writing for the Cooper Review and working with the Delta County Historical Commission and Patterson Museum. Her husband is Don Smith.
