This is part one of a two-part audio recording of an oral history interview with John Pearson. It was conducted December 19, 1985. The interviewer is Dr. James Conrad.
In this interview, John Pearson talks about growing up in Hunt County, as well as his experience and knowledge of cotton farming in the 1960s and 1970s. He discusses how his family has been involved in cotton, and how he moved around Hunt County when he was younger. He talks about his experience in the cotton business, namely how he became superintendent of the Farmers and Merchants Compress and Warehouse Company, which owned the cotton compressors. He details how he oversaw the quality, weighing, manufacturing, distribution, sampling, storage, and grading of cotton.
Pearson’s wife, who is not named in the interview, also talks about her experience in the cotton business, including manufacturing details. John discusses some of the struggles of his cotton business, including keeping the cotton dry and fluctuating markets. He talks about the hours his employees worked, and how he’d have over 100 people working for him during peak cotton season. Near the end of the interview, John and his wife talk about tips they would give to cotton manufacturers in the future.
