Abstract
One of the most challenging tasks for students in multivariable calculus is to correctly set up integration problems. The limited research in multivariable calculus suggests that this is due to the need to coordinate algebraic and geometric representation of the problem while maintaining representational flexibility. The purpose of this study is to explore, using data collected via Smartpen-recorded task-based interviews, the approaches that both experts in calculus III and novices take to set up and solve multiple integral problems.
