According to campus legend, Professor Mayo brought the Victory Bell to Commerce when he moved the school from Cooper in 1895. The bell was originally used to call students to class and was later used to celebrate athletic victories, hence the name. The bell's solid granite base was donated in 1927. The bell was removed from its mount in February 1961 to be repaired after it was damaged. While the bell no longer rings, it is an intrinsic piece of both campus history and tradition. The Victory Bell is currently located next to the flagpole at the end of Education Drive.
