South Apartments consisted of ten army surplus barracks from Camp Maxey in Lamar County. Like the G.I. Village, the units were used to alleviate overcrowding on campus in the post-war years. The buildings were remodeled after arriving in Commerce to include three bedroom and efficiency units, thus accommodating both single and married veterans. The apartments were used as dormitories until they were closed in 1976. They were used for storage by the university for almost a decade prior to their demolition. South Apartments were laid out single file on a tract of land south of Culver Street, almost one mile from the center of campus. Bound by Culver to the north and Monroe to the east, the university constructed additional roads to the west and south of the complex. These roads are now closed to the public but are still visible, as are the large trees that once stood next to the apartments.
