Description

This is a video recording of an oral history interview with Edward H. Richards. It was conducted October 6, 2014. The interviewer is Victoria Paille.

In this interview, Edward Richards discusses his service in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Edward Richards was born January 1, 1948, in Portland, Oregon. He began his university education during the early years of the Vietnam War. While attending school, he dropped a class, which lowered his credit hours below that necessary threshold to avoid the draft. Two weeks later he received his draft notice, requiring him to report for duty. Richards chose to enlist in the Air Force where he began training on the loading and checking of weaponry on aircraft. Richards spent time at various duty stations in the Asian Pacific theatre, including Japan, Korea, and Thailand.

Richards re-enlisted in the military when his tour was up, in order to better provide for his family. He spent the next sixteen years in the military, retiring in 1989. He earned several academic degrees, including a Master’s Degree in Engineering and a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on teaching engineering, from East Texas State University.
