This is the script for an Oral History Moment with Carl Ford. An Oral History Moment is a small segment of clips from an oral history interview presented by a narrator. The interview was conducted October 28, 2013. The interviewer is Nick Sprenger. The script author is Nick Sprenger and the narrator is Allan Folsom.
In this interview, Carl Ford discusses his service in the Army during the Vietnam War and his career as an educator in the Department of Defense.
Sergeant Carl Ford was born in Stockton, California in 1944. He and his family moved to Oklahoma when Ford was three years old, where his father raised cattle.
Ford attended Northeastern State University, in Oklahoma, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. He went on to the University of Central Arkansas to pursue a Master's Degree in educational administration. Ford was drafted into the 4th Armored Division of the United States Army in 1967, when he was only six credit hours shy of completing his Master's Degree.
Carl Ford served in Germany for two years before he was discharged, and took a position at the Department of Defense as an educator. His primary responsibility was to teach the children of military personnel stationed overseas. Ford taught in other settings as well, such as in Tokyo where he tutored prominent Japanese businessmen in English. He also taught in Seoul, Korea, Okinawa, Japan, and the Philippines. Ford earned a doctorate in educational administration in 1982 while living in the Philippines. There was an uprising of the New People's Army while he lived there, which led to considerable unrest and violence. Ford was evacuated to Germany after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. Ford retired in 1994 and moved to the Dallas area, where he founded and operates the Carl Ford Property Management Corporation.
