Description
This is an audio recording of an oral history interview with Amanda White. It was conducted on May 30, 1990. The interviewers are Dr. James Conrad and Kyle Wilkinson. Amanda White was born on May 26, 1893, and she was raised on a 150-acre farm in Caddo Mills, Texas. Her family grew cotton and corn, canned fruit, and kept livestock including horses, hogs, and two milk cows, which provided the majority of their food. White discusses aspects of day-to-day life, including what her mother grew in the garden and what kind of clothing she wore. When asked whether sharecroppers were perceived differently than other farmers, since they did not own the land they farmed, White states that she did not think they were viewed negatively. They were just trying to get by, like everyone else. Race relations in Caddo Mills are also discussed. White talks about her family, including children and grandchildren, and she describes going into town with her parents as a child.
