This collection contains materials documenting the experience of Glenda McKissic Baylor, the first Black Homecoming Queen at East Texas State University (ETSU), now Texas A&M University-Commerce. Baylor attended ETSU starting in 1968 and earned a degree in Business in 1971. In 1969, she became the first Black Homecoming Queen, finishing 15 votes ahead of the second place candidate. She was a member of the Afro-American Student Society of East Texas (ASSET), which sponsored her candidacy for Homecoming Queen, and was an original pledge of Alpha Phi Kappa sorority. After graduation Baylor worked as a teacher and counselor in Los Angeles before serving as a Dean of Instruction and elementary school principal for Dallas ISD until her retirement. She married James N. Baylor in 1979. The collection includes photographs of the Homecoming ceremony, an oral history with Glenda McKissic Baylor, and a scrapbook chronicling her time at ETSU.
