Abstract
To understand the meaning of a work of Art requires serious contemplation on the part of the viewer. Through this process the full meaning of the artist's choices and their aesthetic can be uncovered. Visual metaphor is one of the contemplative methods that can be found in the majority of the visual arts. This thesis is an investigation into creating visual metaphors. In sculpture, the power of metaphor is evidenced through the resonance of materials and compositional decisions. The natural qualities of the materials are meant to trigger the consideration of a deeper meaning derived from the interaction between the physical qualities and the psychological associations attached to the juxtaposed materials. The artistic research will involve the creation of a series of stone sculptures for exhibition.
