Abstract
This thesis uses feminist standpoint theory to determine if Gracey's (1972) comparison of kindergarten to academic boot camp is sociologically accurate in 2013. Findings suggest that although kindergarten may be to school what boot camp is to the military, unlike military boot camp, kindergarten is almost exclusively a woman's domain. Consequently, from a feminist theoretical standpoint, the analogy of kindergarten to boot camp is somewhat erroneous. Whereas boot camp focuses on desocialization accompanied by degredation and then resocialization, kindergarten is almost entirely focused on the positive aspects of socialization.
