Constructed following the destruction of the first gymnasium by fire, Whitley Gymnasium, as it was dubbed by the students, was only surpassed in size by gymnasiums at Texas A&M and the University of Texas. The gym featured a regulation playing court, eight dressing rooms with forty-eight showers, and an electronic scoreboard. Whitley Gym was primarily used by men's athletics at first, while the women's programs continued using the "Cub Gym" attached to Ferguson Social Sciences. After the University Field House was completed for men, Whitley Gym became the women's gymnasium. Renovations included the addition of badminton courts, dance studios, and an indoor archery range. Whitley Gym is now used as a training and conditioning facility for the football team. It is located on the north side of campus at the intersection of Bois D'Arc Street and Lee Street.
