According to photographs in the Locust Yearbooks, the site that became known as Lion Field was used as early as 1924. Stadium seating on the west side was constructed by 1929, possibly as early as 1927. Outdoor lighting was added in 1930, allowing for night games. Student seating on the east side was constructed in 1936. Construction was completed by students in the National Youth Administration Program, which was part of the Works Progress Administration. Construction only took one week. The growing popularity of football led to a remodel and enlargement of the west side seating in 1938. The two sides of the stadium could seat around 10,000 people. Lion Field was used by the football and track teams. At one point there was a baseball field adjacent to the stadium, but it is unknown if it was considered part of Lion Field or a separate facility. Lion Field covered roughly the same area as the current University Field House and a portion of the grounds once occupied by the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
