Abstract

In this paper we discuss the characteristics of medical flexible spending accounts (FSAs), including their tax benefits and forfeiture risk. We examine previous work that discusses the problem of optimizing FSA contributions to minimize the risk and maximize the benefits, all from the perspective of the utility of money. Finally, we conduct new work in the optimization of FSAs. In particular, we examine the role of risk aversion in FSA optimization.
