Glenda McKissic Baylor

Glenda McKissic Baylor was the first Black Homecoming Queen at East Texas State University (ETSU), now Texas A&M University-Commerce. Baylor attended ETSU starting in 1968 and earned a degree in Business in 1971.

In 1969, she became the first Black Homecoming Queen, finishing 15 votes ahead of the second place candidate. She was a member of the Afro-American Student Society of East Texas (ASSET), which sponsored her candidacy for Homecoming Queen, and was an original pledge of Alpha Phi Kappa sorority.

After graduation, Baylor worked as a teacher and counselor in Los Angeles before serving as a Dean of Instruction and elementary school principal for Dallas ISD until her retirement. She married James N. Baylor in 1979.
